Recently I was working on a project structured as a mono repo - smaller projects within a larger maintained their own dependencies.

project-structure/
$ tree -d -I \node_modules\* -L 2
.
└── project-1
│ ├── node_modules
│ ├── ...
│ └── index.js
└── project-2
│ ├── node_modules
│ ├── ...
│ └── index.js
├── .gitignore
├── ...
└── yarn.lock

I wanted to be able to ignore all of the node_modules directories without having to maintain multiple .gitignore files.

The solution was surprisingly simple:

.gitignore
node_modules/

In the future, however, I may be better served by adopting the community’s choice for what should and shouldn’t be tracked by git. Github, the company, maintains a repository for many common language / framework specific .gitignore files. Here is the recommendation for node projects:

.gitignore
